Day of VCSEL (March 22) was established by Microoptics group, and registered as an anniversary with the Japan Anniversary Association (May 6, 2021).
The vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) was invented by Kenichi Iga (Professor Emeritus of Tokyo Institute of Technology), the representative of Microoptics group, and is a globally recognized device originating in Japan that is used in many application fields. Since it is one of the important devices that support the field of microoptics, it was established as an anniversary based on the day in which the idea was described in his research notebook on March 22, 1977.
